Borrowing guides
Four plain-language guides to the costs, mechanics and risks of short-term borrowing.
The four articles below revise topics found in the 2015 Walsaq site. They focus on questions a reader can check before sharing data or signing a loan agreement. Rules and costs vary by lender and location, so use the linked CFPB resources for current consumer information.
Start with the decision
- How payday loans work explains the repayment structure and the questions to ask before borrowing.
- What “no fee” might leave out shows how to read the total amount due and other charges.
- Borrowing without a checking account examines payment methods and the information a lender may request.
- Online loan checks covers lender identity, cost, repayment and personal-data questions.
A better reading order
If borrowing is only one possible response to a bill, first compare other ways to handle the expense. Then read the total loan cost and the repayment date together. A lower advertised fee does not help if repayment creates another shortfall. Finally, check the lender's identity and your local rules before submitting personal information. The CFPB payday-loan guide is a useful primary source for these steps.
